Your Letters Can Make a Difference

"If you don't get involved in politics, you won't stay involved in farming." A sad statement of the times we live in, but a very true one. Each day farmers and ranchers are hit with some kind of new regulation that will severely effect their ability to do business.

Oftentimes what we find is that our elected officials simply are unaware of the effect their intentions will have on agriculture, and unfortunately it's a numbers game. Meaning the more letters they receive for or against an issue sways how they vote. In other words YOUR LETTERS AND PHONE CALLS CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

As a County Farm Bureau we try to keep strong contacts with our elected officials. But they need to hear from individuals also. SO MAKE YOUR VOICES HEARD.

ABCs of Writing Letters

  1. State the purpose of your letter in the first paragraph. If your letter pertains to a particular piece of legislation, identify it (e.g. HR 2143).
  2. Describe how the bill would affect you or your farm.
  3. Be Courteous.
  4. Get to the point. Stick to the point. Include key information, using examples to support your position. Don't be vague.
  5. Each letter should contain only one issue.
  6. Try to keep your letter to one page.
