APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE FOR WEED MANAGEMENT SCHOLARSHIP

The University of California Cooperative Extension is now accepting applications for the 1999 Bill and Jane Fischer Vegetation Management Scholarship.

The scholarship, established to honor UC Cooperative Extension farm advisor emeritus Bill Fischer and his wife Jane, will provide an award of up to $1,000 to a graduate student studying vegetation management or weed science. The application deadline for 1999 is May 3.

Preference will be given to individuals with a demonstrated interest in vegetation management careers. U.S. citizenship and a grade point average that would qualify for entrance to graduate school are required. The financial need of applicants may be considered.

Application forms are available by writing or stopping by the UC Cooperative Extension office, 1720 S. Maple Ave., Fresno, CA 93702; by calling (559) 456-7285; or by sending an e-mail message to cdfresno@ucdavis.edu. Two reference letters completed by a professor, academic advisor or an individual who knows the applicant's abilities and potential must accompany the application.

The Bill and Jane Fischer Vegetation Management Scholarship recognizes the contributions to agriculture Bill Fischer made during his 37-year career. He used applied research to develop new information and as a teaching tool, published 50 volumes of research summaries, contributed to several text books and integrated pest management manuals, and wrote many articles that appeared in scientific and popular journals.
