New Citrus Varieties Topic at Lindcove Field Day

New late-maturing citrus varieties which scientists believe could extend the San Joaquin Valley navel orange season will be taste-tested and viewed during a walking tour of the variety demonstration block at the University of California Lindcove Research and Extension Center from 9 a.m. to 12 noon Tuesday, Jan. 5.

"We get calls all the time from people asking for data on late-maturing navel oranges," said UC Riverside's Tracy Kahn, who manages the citrus variety collection. "People are trying to decide what to plant."

Varieties from Australia and Spain are included in the demonstration planting.

Also during the field day, UC Davis Extension Horticulturist Louise Ferguson will present data from her field trials on the performance of Satsuma and other mandarins on various rootstocks.

The field day is free and open to the public. No advance registration is necessary.

The Lindcove Research and Extension Center is east of Visalia, off Highway 198. (Turn left off Highway 198 onto Mehrton Road, right on Rd. 228, then right on Ave. 316. Entrance is on the right.)
